There are more events happening in Kerry to mark National Volunteering Week 2012, which takes place from the 14th-20th May, than anywhere else in Ireland. Organised by Kerry Volunteer Centre in conjunction with the national volunteer development agency Volunteer Ireland, the Week is focused on recognising and celebrating volunteers and volunteering in Kerry and encouraging people of all ages to get involved in volunteering.
Hannah Lane, Manager of Kerry Volunteer Centre, explained that ‘throughout Kerry from Brosna to Castlemaine, from Annascaul to Rathmore, from Caherciveen to Listowel, from Tralee to Tahilla, community centres, schools, voluntary groups, charities, tidy town committees, families, nursing homes, advocacy groups and support services are celebrating volunteering, recognising the contribution of their volunteers and providing opportunities for people to volunteer. In total 49 events involving 100’s of students and 100’s of adults are scheduled in honour of National Volunteering Week which takes place from Monday 14th-Sunday 20th May 2012.
In the National Schools of Shrone Rathmore, Coolick, Knockaderry, St. Oliver’s in Killarney, Scoil Eoin Tahilla, Realt Na Mara Tousist, Cullina, Brosna, Knocknagoshel, Knockaclarrig, Rathmorrel, Clogher in Ballymacelligott, Cill Conla Ballybunion, Loughfouder, Scoil Chriost Ri in Causeway, An Bhreac Cluain B in Annascaul and Bhaile an Chrosaigh Ballyduff, students are getting involved in school tidy ups or clean ups, bulb planting, gardening, painting, recycling and biodiversity projects and making thank you cards for the adults who volunteer within the school on management committees and at school events. In the secondary schools of St Brendan’s College and St. Brigid’s Secondary School in Killarney, Killorglin Community College, Castlegregory Secondary School and Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School in Tralee, students are volunteering to befriend older people in the community whilst others will be working to clean up the school grounds and surrounding areas and raise awareness of the importance of recycling.
Organisations throughout Kerry have put thoughtful consideration and effort into making sure that their volunteers are celebrated and honoured. For example, in organisations such as Listowel FRC, Maine Valley FRC CONNECT Project, Kerry Volunteer Centre, Multiple Sclerosis Tralee, Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club, Killorglin Tidy Towns, Enable Ireland Kerry Services, the 7th Kerry Dingle, Corca Dhuibhne Scouts, Sneem Welfare Group, Kerry Action for Development Education, The Suaimhneas Centre, Firies Youth Club, Rose of Tralee International Festival, the Parents Support Group at St. Brigid's Resource Centre and St. Brendan’s Park FC appreciation events ranging from thank you lunches to tea/coffee mornings/afternoons with cake to BBQs to messages of appreciation to volunteers have been organised to thank volunteers for the valuable contributions they make and to acknowledge the many different roles they play in making their organisations such a success.
Other projects and organisations such as Killarney Tidy Towns, Listowel Tidy Towns, Tralee Community Garden Project, Killorglin Tidy Towns, Annascaul Tidy Towns, Sisters of St. Joseph Home in Killorglin, South West Kerry Family Resource Centre, Enable Ireland Adult Services and Ballyspillane Family Resource Centre are providing hands-on volunteering opportunities for people in Kerry to get involved with.
Hannah explained “Daily throughout the communities, parishes, classrooms, estates and neighbourhoods of Kerry, people young and old, of over 55 different nationalities, are volunteering, making a difference and supporting many deserving causes. Such volunteerism is worthy of acknowledgement and National Volunteering Week provides an ideal platform to shine a light on volunteering and facilitates all of us in Kerry to thank volunteers and celebrate the contribution that volunteers make 365 days a year. Another wonderful thing about National Volunteering Week is that it gives everyone a unique chance that they might not get during the year, regardless of age or stage, to get involved in local volunteering opportunities that are fulfilling, engaging and which contribute to the development of communities and the betterment of Kerry.”
“Finally, I would like to say well done and thank you to everyone involved in organising, hosting and participating in all 49 National Volunteering Week Events. Once again, Kerry can be proud of its volunteering achievements and for making the Week such a tremendous success locally.”
